PERSONAL SAFETY
THE RIVER OAKS SAFETY COMMITTEE IS DESIGNED
TO BE AN INFORMATION CONDUIT AND A RESOURCE IN THE FOLLOWING ARENAS:
AROUND THE HOME
- Install a “Monitored” home security system and make its
use part of your daily routine.
- If your garage door remote is lost or stolen, change the
security pin switch settings on both your controller and remaining remote.
- If you sleep with open first floor windows, install pins
or locks to restrict the window to a minimal open setting.
- Trim accessible bushes around windows so the bottom
portion of the bush is open for viewing and someone can not hide behind them.
- A barking dog from within a house is a great deterrent
to thieves. The next best thing to a live dog is to purchase and install an
auxiliary “Barking Dog” door answering device.
- Be leery of
strangers with “emergencies” who want to enter your house to use your phone.
Keep the door bolted and tell them that you are calling 911 for them.
IN YOUR CAR
**Park your vehicle in the garage, if possible, and lock your garage
side door.**
IF NOT, FOLLOW THESE
SAFEGUARDS:
- Install a vehicle security alarm and the “Club”
- DO NOT leave valuables, briefcases, vehicle title, or
the garage door remote is your outside vehicles.
- Have your vehicle’s windows etched with an
identification code. Some auto glass companies will perform this service.
Call your local Crime Prevention Officer for direction or referrals.
- Install motion sensor security lights to aid in
illuminating your outside vehicle.
- Also park your vehicle in a fashion that it can be
viewed from a front window. Leave the blinds slightly open so to provide easy
viewing of the vehicle.
- Purchase only the high-end stereos that have removable
faces and built-in security protection features. Install the (associated and
included) warning stickers.
- If your vehicle is in the "Luxury" class, have "Lo Jack"
or some other GPS tracking service installed.
- Arrange
an agreement with your neighbors to show a “presence” by yelling at the
thieves from their individual front doors if a break-in is in progress.
AUTOS WHILE AWAY FROM HOME.
- Hide valuables in the trunk or away from sight
- Be disciplined enough to lock the doors and install
the “Club” at every stop.
- NEVER leave the car running while you quickly drop
something off.!
- Breaking into an open or unlocked car door will only
be a Misdemeanor violation, while a locked door is considered a Felony,
unlike breaking into a home, locked or unlocked, which is always a Felony.
- Never role down your window to answer a stranger and
make sure your doors are locked when someone approaches your car, even a
policeman, especially at night. Once you have ID that he (officer) is
legitimate then you can follow his directions.
- If someone confronts you in your car, hit the horn,
and speed away if you can safely do it.
- If someone follows you home do not stop or get out of the car but drive
to the nearest public place and call 911 (264-5151 from your cell phone)
DURING AND AFTER AN INCIDENT:
- If an auto break-in is occurring, call 911, give a full
description of the thieves & their car.
- Alert your neighbors, if you have arranged a “Show of
Presence Strategy” beforehand.
- DO NOT confront the thieves.
- Make a report to the Police & to your Block Captain (if
you have one) after an incident.
- If you find a crime has occurred and the purpetrators
are no longer present or the incident has resolved, call the non-emergency
number (264-5471) or go on line to file an incident report:
